How Realistic Are the 2012 End of the World Scenarios?

The 2012 end of the world scenarios have been popularised in modern culture, but are inspired by the fact that the Mayan Long Count calendar ends on December 21st, 2012. This is viewed by some (but not all) as meaning that the Maya were of the opinion that there would be nothing beyond that - that they saw nothing as happening after that time or that they opinion that this world was coming to an end.

Potential end of the world events have been described as being triggered by a planetary alignment that would see the path of the Sun reach a conjunction with the mid-point of the galactic equator, or else a shifting of the Earth's poles so that north becomes south.

Are these events realistic and could they bring about the end of the world as we know it?

How Realistic Are the 2012 End of the World Scenarios?

The shifting of the pole may be magnetic only-that the pole flips and the orientation of the planet remains the same. Yet others have theorized from the proximity of fossilized vegetation in places that it does not belong, that the Earth's temperate zones were once in very dissimilar places and that this could have been caused by a slippage of the Earth's crust so that it moves to a new position.

Such a shift would cause similar events as a planetary conjunction, though the latter would be the result of changing gravitational effects. These events may cause huge earthquakes, tsunami and volcanic eruptions to occur.

All of these events have been witnessed time and again and are the realm of science fact, not fiction. We have seen the destructive potential of each of them, and if they were to occur on a world wide scale because they were driven by an external force, the world's accident services would be unable to cope-there would be gigantic extinction.

The result of a pole shift, especially when occurring at the same time as a planetary conjunction, is unknown since the last shift occurred long before human memory.
